The right hotel is half the trip

Saint-Tropez is the social heart of the South of France, and the hotel you choose decides which version of it you get. Some put you on the port, steps from dinner and the late-night bars. Others sit in the pines above Pampelonne, where the loudest thing all day is the cicadas.

None of these hotels is the "best" in the abstract. Each one is right for a particular kind of traveler, and wrong for others. So for every hotel below I've noted who it suits and who should look elsewhere, the same way I'd talk it through with you on a call.

One practical note before you fall in love with a hotel: in July and August, traffic on the single road into town is famous. A hotel twenty minutes away in May can be an hour away in August, so think about how often you'll want to be in the village.

In the village

Walk to the port, the boutiques and dinner

Cheval Blanc St-Tropez

Effortless French glamour from LVMH, on one of the best sites in town, with its own private beach on the Mediterranean, which is very rare here. It's deliberately small, and it books up year after year.

Best for: quiet luxury, couples and honeymooners, and travelers who know Saint-Tropez well and want to walk to dinner. Skip it if: you want a scene, or kids' activities all day.

Airelles Pan Deï Palais

A jewel box of a hotel with only 12 rooms, warm colors and exotic, Indian-inspired decor, built as a romantic residence for a princess. It's the often-forgotten sister of Château de la Messardière, and guests can use the château too.

Best for: couples, honeymoons and anyone who likes a residential, discreet feel. Skip it if: you're traveling with kids or want a big, grand hotel.

Hôtel Byblos

Byblos doesn't just sit near the scene, it is the scene, built like a little Provençal village with the legendary Les Caves du Roy nightclub inside. Mick Jagger held his wedding reception here in 1971.

Best for: fun, eccentric design, nightlife and families with older teens or twenty-somethings. Skip it if: you want serenity or total privacy.

Hôtel de Paris Saint-Tropez

Modern Saint-Tropez style, centered on the village's rooftop pool. The location is its superpower, and the service is stylish without being intimidating.

Best for: travelers who want to be in the middle of things, with a modern look. Skip it if: you want a serene retreat or have young children.

AREV Saint-Tropez

The new generation: opened in 2024 with 35 rooms, colorful and yacht-inspired, with a social-club feel. It's close to town but slightly removed, and it stays open all year.

Best for: a younger crowd (or younger energy) and anyone allergic to formality. Skip it if: you want a palace hotel or a big resort.

Villa Cosy Hotel & Spa

A chic, low-key boutique hideaway with modern, minimal design and its own small organic vineyard. Open year-round.

Best for: couples who want ease and privacy, with beach clubs and restaurants close by. Skip it if: you want extensive resort facilities or are traveling with kids.

In the hills & vineyards

Space, views and a short drive to town

Airelles Château de la Messardière

A 19th-century château in the hills above the Bay of Pampelonne, unapologetically lavish and much bigger than people expect (say it mes-sar-dyair). The hotel is the destination here, and it's reported to be the main setting for season 4 of The White Lotus.

Best for: travelers who want a scene and a resort-style stay, and families, thanks to a great kids club. Skip it if: you prefer discreet, minimal or laid-back.

La Réserve Ramatuelle

An ultra-discreet cliffside hideaway that began life as a private villa compound. Contemporary design, a serious spa, and a beach club about ten minutes away by car. It's 15 to 20 minutes from town, traffic permitting.

Best for: privacy, villas with hotel service, families, couples and groups of friends. Skip it if: it's your first time in Saint-Tropez and you want to be in the mix.

Hôtel Lou Pinet

Like staying at a very stylish friend's summer house: colorful, vintage Saint-Tropez, relaxed service, and a "secret cave" spa (say it loo-pee-nay). Tucked away, but a short drive from the village.

Best for: couples and return visitors who love the old-school Saint-Tropez spirit. Skip it if: you want a grand hotel or a hotel beach club.

Althoff Villa Belrose

On the hill in Gassin, looking straight across the Bay of Saint-Tropez, with 39 recently renovated rooms and suites and a celebrated fine-dining terrace. A calm, elegant base with one of the best views around.

Best for: food lovers and couples who want the view without the noise. Skip it if: you want to walk into town.

Along the coast

Beaches, wellness and a calmer pace

Lily of the Valley

A design-forward wellness retreat by Philippe Starck in La Croix-Valmer, 15 to 25 minutes from Saint-Tropez. The 2,000-square-meter spa even has a snow room, but you can eat and drink exactly as you please. Open year-round.

Best for: wellness with flexibility, couples, honeymoons and friends, beach plus spa. Skip it if: you want old-world glamour or to stay in town.

COMO Le Beauvallon

Grand Riviera calm across the bay from Saint-Tropez, long a private haven for the likes of Winston Churchill, Colette and Audrey Hepburn. Understated elegance, real space and a wellness focus.

Best for: families and anyone who wants Saint-Tropez within reach but a quiet base. Skip it if: you want to be in the buzz.

Planning notes

Before you book

Book early for summer

For July and August, start by the winter before. The smallest hotels, like Cheval Blanc and Pan Deï Palais, have very few rooms and go first.

Village or hills?

Stay in the village if you want to walk to dinner and the port. Choose the hills, Ramatuelle or the coast for space and quiet, and plan on a driver or a boat for nights out.

Many hotels are seasonal

A lot of Saint-Tropez closes outside the warm months. AREV, Lily of the Valley and Villa Cosy are among those that stay open all year.

Combine it with the rest of the Riviera

Saint-Tropez pairs beautifully with a few nights in Cap d'Antibes, Cannes or Monaco. Have a look at Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, about an hour and a half along the coast, or see the whole coast from the water on a luxury yacht cruise.
